Battling Chronic YI and BV Infections

Writer's picture: Aleisha BroomeAleisha Broome

Here I am again talking about something that the average person wouldn’t want to openly discuss.

In my youthful years, I have learned A Lot in regards to sex and how to properly address different aspects of it. Before I dive into the topic, this is coming from straight experience. For a few years I battled chronic yeast infections and bacteria vaginosis due to an imbalance of my hormones.

If you’ve never heard of either one of these, yeast infections occur whenever the natural yeast in your body is unbalanced leading to an overgrowth of Candida.

Bacterial vaginosis is very similar to YI only this one occurs when there is an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina.

Bodybuilding is when my chronic episodes of yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis began. When you’re dieting down, cutting out foods, training several times a day, and losing weight faster than the average this can and will affect your hormones.

Anyways, it started then and only got worse when I fell pregnant with my twins. I was constantly taking some sort of pill or suppository to “help” balance me out, and it really put a strain on my mental and sexual health.

I didn’t realize that this was a battle that many women fought until I began opening up more about it. I wasn’t educated on the different things that women face when they mature. However, I also believe that many simply do not know what they are battling because they are too embarrassed to talk about it. I GET IT!!

I’m sharing all all of this to say that while YI and BV are battles, they are ones that can be won!

Here are some tips that I utilize to battle chronic yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis...

Spandex is cute and sexy but it is a trap for bacteria and moisture.

Yeast thrives off of bacteria and moisture so every now let “her” air out!

Let me see that thong… haha yeah I know I’m a thong kind of girl myself but every now and then cotton underwear is a go to because it is breathable and moisture wicking!

PH balance feminine washes do the exact opposite of what they say they do. They are a trap, avoid them and go with an antibacterial unscented soap such as Dove.

Apple cider vinegar baths in combination with boric acid suppositories are guaranteed to bring relief within 24 hours!

Nutrablast has been my savior in the past, and I’d recommend maintenance after each menstrual cycle!

Watch what you eat, sugar keeps yeast thriving so cut back on sugars at least until you are fully cured.

Stay hydrated! The body needs water for everyday function, and it helps regulate your PH naturally.

Men should be informed on this subject also because they might be contributing to the bacteria build up without necessarily realizing it!

For those who are sexually active, make sure that you and your partner are practicing good hygiene by being properly clean prior and after ALL sexual engagement. This includes properly sanitizing all toys as well.

Finally, do not be afraid to schedule a wellness appointment with your gynecologist if things seems off. They are not there to judge you, and will be more than happy to get you where you need to be! Stay educated, and educate our youth!

You’re not alone, and it doesn’t have to be such a taboo topic! Add to the conversation and share any tips you might have used yourself!

Stay Safe and Healthy!
